Bow Bungee Lacing installation

As described earlier, the stock Hobie Mirage Revolution comes with no lash points or deck lines on the bow. And the forward latch bungee hold downs are hard to grab. To allow for more storage on the kayak a system of bungee lacing was installed on the bow.

Above is a photo of the finshed product. All the bungee buttons and pad eyes were installed with stainless steel screws, fender washers, and nylock nuts. The bungee used was 1/4".

There are some things to note. The first buttons (most sternward) were installed by replacing one of the screws (longer) used to fasten the internal rudder system pulleys. The other rudder pulley screws can be seen next to the button. There are two rows of buttons, then a pad eye, then another two rows of buttons, and finally a pad eye. The lacing over the hatch holds it down nicely so the stock system was removed. Simply pop the lacing off the buttons to access the hatch. The pad eyes prevent loss of the bungee. The forward buttons will allow quick lashing of gear. Hooks are used to attach the ends of the bungee to the forward pad eyes.

These are the bungee buttons, pad eyes, and bungee hooks used (or similar).

Above is the lacing plan. The distances are measured from the bow point. Figuring out how much tension to put on the bungee is challenging. As the profile shows the flacid length of the lacing is 206". Attach one hook to one end of the bungee, and mark the 137" length on the bungee with tape. Lace the bungee, tie it off at the end and see if the tension seems appropriate. Adjust as desired. Remember you can always but off more later. When cutting bungee use a sharp pair of scissors then immediately apply flame to the cut ends to cauterize the frayed ends.
