The wake from this Trident Submarine was spotted just south of the
Hood canal bridge from 10 nm north and 5500 feet on a spectacularly clear day,
07 Feb 2006. These submarines are based at Bangor, WA on Hood Canal. The
Base at Bangor is covered by a PROHIBITED ZONE, P-51, up to
2500 feet MSL.

Tridents are Ohio class submarines, 560 feet long and 42 feet abeam.
They displace about 19,000 tons, dive to more than 1000 feet at which they
can cruise at 25 kts. They carry 15 officers and 140 enlisted crew.
|
These submarines are commonly seen in Hood Canal and the Straits of
Juan de Fuca. When operating on the surface they are escorted by lead and
trailing boats. I circled this boat twice at 1500 feet. FAA regulations on
open water call for a 500 foot minimum clearance from vessels.

Yes, people avidly surf the freezing water.

J's 29 pound king salmon, termed springs in BC. Lance our fishing
guide out of Tofino is a hard-working and enterprising fellow. I heartily
recommend his services. You can find him at Lance's Sportfishing Adventures

D's 27 pound king.

The limit for king salmon is 2 per person per day. We limited,
plus D landed a cute 5 pound sockeye which BBQ'd up perfectly a few hours
later.

Tofino airport, CYAZ, looking east. Pacific Ocean on the right.
Watch out for the ditch transecting taxiway F, between taxiways C and H.
Also, beware of wildlife on the runway. A black bear was on the airport as
we landed. There is a golf course just off the airport and you need a taxi
to get into town.
